Preventing BV and recurrent vaginitis
No habit guarantees prevention, but these steps are commonly recommended.
- Avoid douching. It disrupts vaginal bacteria and is linked to BV.
- Use mild, unscented soap only on the outside (vulva); do not wash inside.
- Use condoms or limit new partners; both are associated with lower BV risk.
- Change out of wet clothes promptly; choose breathable underwear.
- Avoid scented pads, wipes, and sprays which can irritate skin.
- Wipe front to back.
- Do not smoke; smoking is linked to BV.
Some people find probiotics helpful, but evidence is mixed. See the product hub. If BV keeps returning, see a clinician about suppressive treatment.
Not sure what is causing your itch?
Try our free Itch & Discharge Symptom Checker. It is not a diagnosis, but it can help you see whether infection, irritation, incontinence-related dermatitis, or eczema/psoriasis is more likely.
