BV treatment overview: OTC vs prescription
Prescription
BV is treated with prescription metronidazole, clindamycin, or tinidazole (oral or vaginal). Take the full course even if symptoms improve. Avoid alcohol with metronidazole or tinidazole as directed. (CDC treatment guidelines)
Over the counter
OTC antifungals treat yeast, not BV. Using them for BV will not help. OTC pH gels and probiotics are sometimes used for support, but evidence that they cure BV is limited.
Recurrent BV
Talk to a clinician: longer or repeat regimens exist. Partner-related questions: see is it contagious?
