Vulvar Dermatitis (Irritant and Contact)

Educational only. This is not a diagnosis. Please confirm with a clinician.

Vulvar dermatitis is skin inflammation that causes itching, burning, redness, rawness or swelling, often with little or no discharge. It is frequently mistaken for a yeast infection.

Common triggers

  • Urine contact from leaking, dribbling or pads (more likely with diabetes and glycosuria)
  • Scented soaps, wipes, washes, laundry products and panty liners
  • Sweat, friction, tight clothing, over-washing
  • Allergic reactions to creams, including repeated antifungal creams

Why this matters

A positive yeast or bacteria test does not always mean the organism is causing the symptoms. Read Colonization vs. Cause, especially if you have diabetes or leak urine.

What helps

  • Keep skin clean and dry; rinse with water, pat dry
  • Use a plain barrier ointment (zinc oxide or petrolatum)
  • Stop scented or irritating products
  • Manage blood sugar and bladder leakage
  • See a clinician if it persists, to rule out lichen sclerosus, eczema or infection
