Is It Contagious?

Is it contagious? Is my partner the problem?

Short version: it depends on the condition, and recurrent BV or yeast is rarely a simple case of “my partner gave it to me.”

What can be passed between partners

  • STIs such as trichomoniasis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes: yes. Partners need testing and treatment.
  • BV: not classified as an STI, but it is linked to sexual activity and can pass between female partners. Treating male partners has not been shown to reduce recurrence (CDC). Condom use may help.
  • Yeast infections: not considered an STI. A partner may occasionally develop irritation (such as balanitis); they can see a clinician if they have symptoms.
  • Dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis: not contagious.

When partners need treatment

If you have an STI like trichomoniasis, partners should be treated to avoid reinfection. For BV and yeast, routine partner treatment is generally not recommended, though a clinician may advise it in specific recurrent cases.

Myths vs evidence

  • Myth: BV means someone cheated. Evidence: BV can occur without any new partner.
  • Myth: Yeast infections are always sexually transmitted. Evidence: they are usually caused by your own Candida overgrowth.
  • Myth: Poor hygiene causes BV. Evidence: over-washing and douching are more associated with problems.
